Crushed Butler - Uncrushed (1969-71 - dead-hippie Proto-Punk, wild R'n'R: The Stooges, Rocket From the Tombs)

Crushed Butler - Uncrushed We've got a real killer on our hands this time, folks!!

Mostly when music writers throw around the phrase "proto-punk" it don't mean to much, but this is the true thing right here. Very few bands managed to fill the post-73-Stooges, pre-76-Ramones void that was the sputtering dying hippie dream of peace, love, and paisley pants. Sure their was Glam, and Prog, and some tough-as-nails rock'n'roll, but not much really that matched the mountain of fuzz and nothing-to-loose attitude that the Stooges has established as far back as '69.

Not so, as this absolutely killer 6 song E.P. of unreleased demo recording clearly shows. Apparently recorded over the course of 3 years in 3 different studios, Crushed Butler learned the had way that being way ahead of your time usually means no one understands you. Subsequently, you won't be appreciated, you won't make money, and you'll be kicked out onto your asses before you even get started.

Legend has it that when drummer Darryl Read, guitarist Jesse Hector, and bassist Allen Butler were invited to record EMI studios on a wave of local success, they were graciously brought in on limousine, but after laying down a few tracks of their gnarly working class street-skum anthem "Factor Grime," were then less then graciously given the boot and had to ride the subway back home.

The drums are relentless, the guitar moronically-brilliant, the vocals strained and desperate. PERFECT! All the songs are scorchers, even "Love is All Around Me" which sounds weak but isn't. "Love Fighter" is a slow dirge number, but still heavy-as-shit and thick-as-bricks. "High School Dropout" is a bit more standard I-V-IV rocker like Back in the USA era MC5.

The first two tracks, "It's My Life" and "Factory Grime" are absolutely must hear tracks, if you consider your life worth living. Other wise - kill yourself.

I suppose that's where people like you come in.

Appreciated.

thanks for the nice comments guys.

I challenge anyone to find a band that was playing at this time with a more obvious "Punk" sound, and wasn't named "The Stooges."

The New York Dolls wouldn't be around for a few more years ('73).

i've got some cool R'n'R stuff coming up so I hope people are into it.

Hi Denez

I got here from your comment on Yeti on Garcolga's blog.

Thanks for posting Crushed Butler. I'm dying to hear it (I have to take it home and unpack there first).

I've been a big fan of The Hammersmith Gorillas and Jesse Hector's since I "discovered" them back around '75/'76.

You probably need to check out Jesse's earlier rockabilly stuff too (check his site).

As far as the vinyl goes, I've been looking on ebay for several months. It pops up occasionally, but the last one went for $61, which was more than I wanted to pay without having heard it.

As far as punk, it goes as far back as music, my friend.

Mozart would have been the punk of his time.

If you want to hear some loud "braaaoinnnggg" guitar check out Junior Barnard's work with Bob Wills' Texas Playboys, and Bob Dunn's steel guitar work with Milton Brown's Musical Brownies etc.

I remember seeing a list on the internet from WFMU of "punk" from the twenties, I think it was, with some unhinged jazz, blues and country stuff on it too.

There's plenty of wild rockabilly nuts and crazy early r&b screamers I'm sure you'd enjoy too! I know I do!

Cheers,

Marc

Thank you so much for posting this. Jesse Hector really was a man seriously ahead of his time.

For pre-punk contemporaries from that early 70s period not already mentioned here (and how good are The Hollywood Brats? - Casino Steel must be one of the unluckiest men in music, check out histories of the London SS and The Boys to see how he was always the bridemaid and never the bride) give your ear to Third World War (like The Clash in 1971), Figures of Light and the majetic Simply Saucer (who faced utter indifference in Canada despite, or because of, mixing the Stooges and Syd Barrett and the Theramin..!). Germany's Ton Steine Scherben too were mixing it up in a pre-punk style, fusing anger and riffing.

Anyway, thanks again.

DRS.

PS - I meant to include Japan's Les Rallizes Denudes in the above post too. Some of their stuff from the early 70s is like putting your head in a flood blender. Check out a track such as 'Field of Artifical Flower,' it takes no prisoners.

Hey I found your page because I googled dead hippie records-I'm looking for a copy of the punk Dead hippie band for my dad, because he was in the band, but all I can find on e-bay is one copy of the surf band dead hippie-any suggestions?

At 9:08 AM, Blogger nick beef said...

gee, Sylvie, the link to your profile doesn't work so I can't contact you. But maybe you'll read this anyways. I found a mention of a band called Dead Hippie from Hollywood, CA that put out an album in 83 called "Living Dead." I'm guessing this is the "surf band" and not your dad's band. With a little more info, I think I might have a better shot a digging it up.

well, let me know.

At 10:35 AM, Blogger Sylvie said...

Actually, I don't think that is the surf band. The year sounds right for when they were together, it would have been late seventies but more likely early eighties, when he hitchhiked from Canada to move to Los Angeles.Sounds like it might be what I'm looking for.

At 12:17 PM, Blogger Unknown said...

what's your dad's name? that would help. Here are all the links I found to a band called "Dead Hippie", they all appear to be the same band:

Thanks to poster above for the lead on Simply Saucer, I haven't heard them. Third World War and The Frenchies are great. Also good along these lines are Billy Ballz "Motorcycle" and Johnny DuCann "Throw Him in Jail", Twenty Seven$ Snap on Face.
