I think of of the first garage comp to focus almost exclusively on this vein of music was the "Shutdown '66" comp that came out in 1991. I read somewhere that the compiler, lacking any better category for describing these sad minor-chord ballads of love-lost and forlorn hearts, as simply "uncompables" because the average garage-head lust was aimed at suburban snot-nosed punk dementia.

Well, you know, punks have feeling too.

In fact, in my opinion, rock n' roll degenerates come in two flavors: cool, popular guys that turn to music because its a quick and easy way to get girls. These are the "Jim Morrisons" of the world and include anyone who's ever worn leather pants.

Then there are the hopeless-causes. These guys have either bad teeth, bad hair, bad skin, or all three. Girls don't like them and they turn to rock and roll out of shear desperation. This includes everyone who has ever been a Ramone. Chances are that hours of practicing "Stairway to Heaven" in their basement will, somehow, manage to magically inject them with just enough sex appeal to get laid at least once. But, unsurprisingly, this will not help them overcome their painful social incompetence and out of frustration they are forced to wright songs about the bad girls who they don't ever want to see again, the good girls who they do, and the girls who they just can't seem to get to notice them at all.

You'll notice that about halfway through, I sort of drop the theme of minor chord, organ heavy garage ballads a bit and throw in some baroque pop, moody rockers, and even a few better known mainstream bands like The Byrds, The Seeds, The Association, etc. I did it for variety, to appeal to a wider audience, and maybe I'll even pump out a second comp in a few short weeks.

Well, I'm off to my room now. I'm gonna go work on the intro to "Louie Louie" for a bit... I wonder if that girl from the soda-pop stand likes rock and roll....

Here's round two of my powerpop compilation. I had this completed weeks ago, but I couldn't find any cool pictures to go along with it. So instead you get lable scans and detailed information about each release. BORING! I know you don't give a fuck because your just a freeloading internet troll who was looking for porn and stumbpled on my blog cuz of the walking booty .gif in the corner there. Well your going to learn something anyways.

Shadowfax - The Russians Are Comming/ Calling The Shots - Risky Disks (1980) - All I know is that this disk runs in the $300 range, and thus why I ripped it from the "Teenage Treats" comp vol. 6, which is kinda rare itself.

The Pork Dukes - Bend And Flush/ Throbbing Gristle - Wood Records (1977) - Apparently some distributor listed this then non-existent band's first release in their catalog as a joke. Over a 1000 pre-orders later someone had to quickly get a band together and actually record the single.

Gary Valentine - The First One/ Tomorrow Belongs To You - (197?) - Bassist for Blondie's solo work. Real good stuff especially since I don't care about Blondie.

Their also all vinyl only.

The Kids (1979 - first-wave Belgian KBD punk rock: Hubble Bubble, Ivy Green, The Saints)

Bootlegged a enough times for this to be accepted as one of the best non-UK/US/Ireland bands of the first rock-n'-roll-tinged punk wave. This is Belgium's The Kids (there was at least 2 others at the same time, not all punk) and this is their rip snortin' first album released on Philips, of all labels. I guess there wasn't quite the same DIY underground distribution system in place yet as there was in the UK and Ireland.

In any case, Philips probably had the same idea in mind that these three delinquent youth had: to capitalize on this emerging punk trend while it was still cool to wear a ripped t-shirt and a dangly earring. But just because lead singer Ludo Mariman on the back cover wears a badge that says "PUNK" and has (shutter) saftey pins through it, doesn't mean that they're not "authentic" or some bullshit like that. In my worthless opinion, there was no such thing as a punk parody band, because punk itself was a parody of prevailing rock and roll cliches. The worse the better! (see the Gong Show's punk episide for an example.)

Ok, enough half-baked punk sociological deconstruction for one day. As the band declare in their first song, "This is Rock n' Roll", the music is, um, well, rock n' roll. Only every cliche is turned up to 10. It's not exactly melodic, but like most bands from the pre-hardcore punk wave, it's memorable thanks in large part to it sounding so damn fun. This was when punk was a still phenomenon that was flirting with some mainstream appeal and everyone was invided, instead of becoming an alienating clique.

Ok, this is one of my top 10 first wave punk albums, despite my above review failing to communicate how much I like this band. If nothing else, it will show you that punk was more than just a London vs. New York fashion contest. There were ADD addled high-school drop-outs looking for some cheep r'n'r thrills every where in the world (see Austraila for more evidence of this.)

Let's give credit to the gnarly-toothed British Norther soul collectors for helping dig-up tones of old shit-encrusted 45's from out some Alzheimer addled old black man's basement. Best part is, all THEY want is is wimpy "North Soul" that you can prance-around-splitting your Adidas pants to while hopped on over-the-counter speed. Or selling on e-Bay for, like, a billion dollars.

Well, thanks for dumping your extra spit-bucket soul trash into the dollar bin for me! Nay! The 50 cent bin!! Yes, its true, there is still plenty of budget soul records out there sitting piled-up sleeve-less in old milk crates, just waiting to get washed off in the sink and set to destroy your record needle. A large part of my soul 45 collection I got in the dollar-or-less bin. Yes most of it is beat to a very-literal piece of shit and almost none of the records that I have here were found in such bad condition and for so cheap (aside from Jerry Williams's "Peanut Duck" and Jimmy Castor's "Troglodyte" [which I actually bought twice for 50 cents in complete shit condition, before I got this clean copy for a $1)

In any case, none of this is "North Soul," some of the more R'n'B tracks and or gospal tracks are not even very danceable, it's mostly southern soul, it's all hot as shit, plus it sounds like it was recorded in the back of a Pentecostal church rec-room.

Here's another useless post that NO ONE will read! Fuck I hardly want to write it. I think this is the second time I wrote a post apologizing about not posting in forever.... and then trying to start blogging again.

Well people still visit my blog and leave comments even though I haven't posted in over A YEAR and most of my links are probably broken. I once again promise that I will try to start blogging again, so keep yer eyes peeled. Maybe I'll expand the focus a bit, maybe I'll narrow it. Maybe I won't change it. Oh, we'll, i guess this means i'll be brakeing till i've got everthing up and running (i'm moving as well). I know you don't care about lamo' personal shit so here's something i've been saving for you to chew on in the mean time. It's Fred "Sonic" Smith's legendary band, with Scott Ashton (another Stooges + MC5 group - see my Destroy All Monster's post for more) and Scott Morgan (from the Rationals, I've got some of that that I can post later as well).

And, yep, their as good as you would have guessed they were.

This was released on white vinyl, limited to 666 copies, so if you don't got it, your a looser.

Crushed Butler - Uncrushed (1969-71 - dead-hippie Proto-Punk, wild R'n'R: The Stooges, Rocket From the Tombs)

We've got a real killer on our hands this time, folks!!

Mostly when music writers throw around the phrase "proto-punk" it don't mean to much, but this is the true thing right here. Very few bands managed to fill the post-73-Stooges, pre-76-Ramones void that was the sputtering dying hippie dream of peace, love, and paisley pants. Sure their was Glam, and Prog, and some tough-as-nails rock'n'roll, but not much really that matched the mountain of fuzz and nothing-to-loose attitude that the Stooges has established as far back as '69.

Not so, as this absolutely killer 6 song E.P. of unreleased demo recording clearly shows. Apparently recorded over the course of 3 years in 3 different studios, Crushed Butler learned the had way that being way ahead of your time usually means no one understands you. Subsequently, you won't be appreciated, you won't make money, and you'll be kicked out onto your asses before you even get started.

Legend has it that when drummer Darryl Read, guitarist Jesse Hector, and bassist Allen Butler were invited to record EMI studios on a wave of local success, they were graciously brought in on limousine, but after laying down a few tracks of their gnarly working class street-skum anthem "Factor Grime," were then less then graciously given the boot and had to ride the subway back home.

The drums are relentless, the guitar moronically-brilliant, the vocals strained and desperate. PERFECT! All the songs are scorchers, even "Love is All Around Me" which sounds weak but isn't. "Love Fighter" is a slow dirge number, but still heavy-as-shit and thick-as-bricks. "High School Dropout" is a bit more standard I-V-IV rocker like Back in the USA era MC5.

The first two tracks, "It's My Life" and "Factory Grime" are absolutely must hear tracks, if you consider your life worth living. Other wise - kill yourself.

Wicked Lady - The Axeman Cometh (1968-72 - Hea)vy-psych Proto-Doom: Witchcraft, Pentagram, Black Sabbath)

Not a lot of info out there on this band, since it appears they never had a legitimate release back in 1968-72 when this material was originally recorded. It wouldn't be until 1994 that the Kissing Spell label would give these recording the light of day, but now even those releases are difficult to find in any format.

Don't let that stop you from taking the plunge and snagging this proto-doom hard-fuzz monster. If you've ever heard a modern Swedish band called Witchcraft, then you already have something of a primer for 70's basement-doom and minor-chord lyte-psych melodies that are common do both of these bands. Imagining if Sabbath Bloody Sabbath-era Black Sabbath, instead of getting all synthy and fast, went into a bit more Jethro Tull-esque folksy melodic jamming. Weird sounding, I know, but I wouldn't be surprised if both The Wicked Lady and Witchcraft share Pentagram as a common denominator.

The first track "Run The Night" is the most balls-to-the-wall rocking, and the song "The Wicked Lady" sound right out of the aforementioned Witchcraft's catalog. Other songs, like "War Cloud" might wait a full 4 min before the vocals kick in, and "The Axeman Cometh" is a hard-rocking instrumental. Add a healthy does of wah-wah hell into the mix, and you might occasionally come a bit too close to wanky-jamming overkill.

But, not for me. The lost-in-a-void vocals, and acid-hangover guitar total blows most other supposedly "heavy" 70's releases out of the water. Singer-guitarist Martin Weaver, here with drummer "Mad" Dick Smith, and bassist Bob Jeffries, would later join another Kissing Spell discovered treasure band, The Dark. I've never heard that album, so if anyone's got it, let me know.

The Gizmos - 1976/1977 (Midwest proto-punk, teenage rock nerds: The Dictators, The Ramones, The Shaggs)

Upon first drop of the needle into these teenage hormone encrusted groves you will likely be, surprisingly, disappointed. But thats the point, dummies!

Rock and roll wasn't meant to be kid tested and mother approved. It's not supposed to be the four years wasted at Music College where you'll end up majoring in audio engineering anyways. It IS supposed to be pure teenage frustration ejaculated straight into you ears!! Sounds GROSS, don't it!?!? You bettcha'!

Many of my favorite rock stars are gross and ugly as fuck, both their visage and in the sounds they excrete- The Ramons (uggh), The Stooges (gaaahh!!), The New York Dolls ([wets pants]), The MC5's (freaks!!) - JUVENILE DELINQUENTS, the whole lot of 'em!! Just the way we like it.

Hailing from the butthole of Indiana, a group of looser drop-out rock journalists and record nerds decided that perhaps they themselves could kick up a racket the likes of which had been largely lost from the late-mid 70's musical landscape. They couldn't, but damn did they ever try!

Remember that this is just prior to when hipster New York bands like The Ramones would make "punk" a house hold word, and so these geeks had few contemporary bands to emulate from (The Dictators are influence #1), a small had full of semi-recent bands to steal liks off of (MC5, The Stooges), and an entire decade of cheap dime-store garage bands from the previous decade to mimic.

The result is some of the most inept music you've ever heard since the Wiggins sisters mongoloid-rocked their way into history with The Shaggs first album. But not just 3 sisters like The Shaggs, The Gizmos took a total of 8 (!!!) band member, 2000 hours of TV watching, 250 bong hits, zero girls, 800 boob jokes, and 3 E.P.'s to make this album.

The album collects their fist self titled E.P., their second "Amerika First" E.P., and their third "World Tour" E.P. plus one bonus track that features a young Johnny Courgar [Melincamp].

But before you start to think that I hate this album, let me say how much I adore these fine young Gizmos. In true Dictators form, the Gizmos lead by Ken Highland, Ted Niemiec, Eddy Flowers, Rich Coffee, and some other guys named Rick, Dave, Jim, and Davey tryed to combine rock and roll with adolescent humor and actually managed to be funny! "Muff Divin'" is so vulgar it even makes my girlfriend blush. Check out the grunge guitar sound of "Amerika First."

Tonights homework: Listen to this album over and over and over again until you learn to LOVE IT. I promise you'll thank me later for it.

due to several requests, which I had ignored for a long time, and my laziness to do an all original post, I've decided to upload some of the classics of this blogs pathetic past. No stinkers here, so you can be sure this is quality material all around. Don't be a dickhead, leave a comment cuz that what keeps me motivated.

Two questions for any readers out there (there must be SOMEONE reading this blog (there are obviously downloaders, but readers?)) :

1) I would like to know how I can use ODEO to embed a single sample song into the blog posts like this guy does HERE. I would like to blog about some newer, and more CopyRight sensitive material (current re-issues, or still in print material).

2) How can I set up a forum that links to my blog, like this guy does over HERE (he actually uses ODEO also). Call me dumb, but I would like to talk to other like minded people about music.

.....durring the mid-80's return of interest in the band, their previous label, Verve, realized that they were sitting on a pile of unreleased Velvet meterial. These 1984 and 1986 albums contained most all of the unreleased album, as well as a hogepog of other tracks. Some of these tracks are great rock and roll numbers (Foggy Notion, We're Gonna Have A Goodtime Together, Temptation Inside Your Heart), brillent pop songs(She's My Best Friend, Ride Into The Sun), while others try to fill some of the avant-guard void that John Cale left (Ferryboat Bill, Hey Mr. Rain).

Angelwitch's debut studio album. If Angelwitch had a fault (and that's a big "if"), it was the overproduction on this album. Maybe it's just because I heard the live album first, but the chorus harmonies always seemed too big and disco-fied on this record. Regardless, this is a legendary recording, and quite possibly the most perfect example of NWOBHM before Witchfinder General and Dickinson-era Maiden. In a perfect world, every jock asshole that claimed to be a Metallica fan in 1993 and DIDN'T own a copy of this album would've been molested extra hard by his wrestling coach as "Enter Sandman" played over the weightroom's loudspeaker.

Here is the exact moment when snot-nosed, tight-jean, American-RnB record-dweebs stopped worrying about perfecting their Jimmy Reed licks and started aiming solely at drugs and girls as the main remedy for a chronic case of pent-up adolescent frustration.

Sorry to say, Eric "cocaine" Clapton, but your Guitar God statues might get you the respect of your mates who can appreciate the authentic purity of master-race white-boy blues, but can you imagine how many hours of shamefully chapped-palmed masturbation he had to endure in order to get his nimble suburban-middle class digits to play like they had been tempered in the backwoods of the American South?

If your young, dumb, full of cum you can make like The Missing Links here and drop that "tallent" ruse for a cloud of blunt-smoke and and a rafter-swinging stage routine because in the end the ladies will go with the long haired guys every time. That's the whole reason for starting a rock band, right?

Yep, it is this very cheep-thrills proto-punk philosophy that would shortly develop into the even more refined no-girls-necessary ethos of the Psychedelic era. But in 1965-66 the drugs weren't THAT good, and so it was just a wild-man ape routine that separated your barely in-tune Fender Stratocaster from the thick-milk cream thighs of the female race.

The Missing Links were Sydney, Australia's answer to the Stones, Kinks, Pretty Things beat-boom of the mid-60's, but like most Australian rock imports, their sound was suspiciously raw, wild, and completely unhinged. Sure the Pretty Things were pretty raw, wild, and unhinged themselves, but The Missing Links give it an armature flair that takes their proto-punk formula into another proto-psych dimension entirely.

Sure much of this album sounds like standard Downliner Sect-type snarled RnB, but tracks like "Wild About You," which anticipated a John's Children-esque mod-psych-biker gang freak-out sex party, and a Pretty Thing's coped "Mama Keep Your Big Mouth Shut", which now sounds like the bongo-rhythmed beach-blanket-bong-out soundtrack that it was never intended to be.

The real deal sealer here though is an at first mysterious track titled "H'tuom Tuhs." What sort of Voodoo nonsense are they speaking you ask? When their recording engineer was playing back the "Mama Keep Your Big Mouth Shut" track, someone in the band like the sound and decided to make a single out of it. Yep, thats right, their bongo-freak-out version of "Mama Keep Your Big Mouth Shut" was intentional cut BACKWARDS and released on two sides of a single and on the LP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read it and weep! "H'tuom Tuhs" in '65?!?! I can't believe they have weed THAT good in the out-backs out Australia!??!!?

Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group (and probably others) have been cracking down on the sale of 30-year old + vinyl bootlegs. Most of these recordings are of concerts, sometimes unreleased demos, etc and were manufactured decades ago. Many titles are collectable and have sold sometimes for hundreds and even thousands of dollars, their value being more of an artifact than contraband. Recordings of Brian Wilson, Led Zeppelin and Neil Young, for example, have been removed from my listings by eBay under a program caled VeRO. Link.

Someone is out there searching for certain titles and artists and requesting their removal from ebay. I can't tell whether the system is powered by computer searches or the eyeballs of bottom-of-the-totem-pole record company interns. It just seems a little up-tight. Record companies aren't making a cent off of ANY used LP auctioned on eBay so why the big fuss over these obscure collector-fetish objects?

Singer Rod Evans (formally of Deep Purple), guitarist Larry "Rhino" Rheinhardt, bassist Lee Dorman (both from Iron Butterfly), and drummer Bobby Caldwell (from the Johnny Winters group) give you some indication of what this band will sound like - hard rock with a progressive complex song structure and strong musical dynamic.

What the fuck does that mean you ask? It means that I'm too lazy to do much work on this one. Pretty hard-rocking most all the way through, but in a pretty mainstream Blue Oyster Cult sort of way. If your really into popular classic hard rock, then you'll dig this (sort of reminds me of the Groundhogs who I posted before), but if your looking for heavier numb-skull dirges you'll have to look else where.

I got this from a friend of mine and it was with the special hologram cover. Wowie Zowie, now that's rock and roll.

Warsaw - An Ideal For Killing (1977-79 - Icy cold minimilist punk: Joy Divison, Crime)

Pre-Joy Division, pre-pre-New Order band featuring guitarist Bernard Albrecht, bassist Peter Hook, drummer Steve Brotherdale, and of course lost soul vocalist Ian Curtis.

Admittedly, I'm not much a fan Joy Division or and less of New Order, but these earlier dirt-raw demo made before the band would change its name (another band called Warsaw Pakt would force the name change) are pretty exciting.

Not at all hi-fi but for this sound, the desperate grit and grim of sounding like it were recorded in a post-apocalyptic fall out shelter often benefits the band sounding colder and crueler than most of their contemporaries.

Yes this low-fi aesthetic also means that at other times the sound it irritating and grating but that is usually on the more melodic tracks like "At A Later Date," while the more atonal tracks like "The Kill" or the paranoid-schizophrenic tracks with a jittery one-line guitar lead like "Novelty" push the bands sound into a harsh avant-guard territory.

Formed in Manchester, England following the performance of The Sex Pistols (the Buzzcocks come from the same scene) Warsaw's basement level unforgiving sound show how much fun The Sex Pistols were having kicking up their racket. Warsaw, by contrast, don't sound like their having fun at all, but are instead compelled by a possession of fuck-it worthlessness.

Stand out tacks are easily "Walked In Line," "Ice Age," and "Warsaw." Once again I'm not a big enough fan of their later bands to know if many of these songs appear on their later releases but at least some of them do, albeit in significantly less raw punk skinned-knees form.

Seriously if you like first wave punk at all then this is worth owning simply for the track "Walked In Line" alone.

Aphrodite's Child - 666 (1970-2 - psych/prog weirdo pop/cult music)

I'll admit that there are several themes that, though cheesy and juvenile, will get me every time - namely references to L.S.D, naked girls, and Satan. Psych-garage songs that allude to LSD (ex. The Pretty Things "L.S.D.") I will by instantly, same goes with metal/hard rock albums that refer to Satanism (ex. Venom's "Welcome to Hell"), and, well pretty much anything with naked girls (Herb Alpert's and the Tijuana Brass' "Wiped Cream and Other Delights").

So, yes, it is under this line of thinking that I purchased this landmark album by Greek prog rockers Aphrodite's Child. But instead of the heavy doomy proto-metal prog that I had expected, "666 - The Apocalypse of John, 13/18" is something very different.

A concept album that that crosses two LP's, "666" really doesn't sound like any other album I've heard before. Some of the tacks are sort of "concept filler" but most of them are interesting like the first track "The System" which is just a repeated chanting of "We've got a system to fuck the system" before slamming into the upbeat rhythm-centered rocker "Babylon."

Other times these interludes show themselves for the space filler that they are with mantras, poetry, sound effects. These can get excessive but they do paint a interesting and moody atmosphere for the album.

Overall the album is much more up-beat than I expected, and even featuring several pop-oriented songs, but don't get me wrong taken as whole this album is as far out and into left-field as they come. Quiet cult-moaning ragas will run head first into wild peddle-to-the-metal acid rockers and then will follow up with a free-jazz sax interlude before mutating into a danceable prog-funk.

I'm having a difficult time describing the music here, so I'll just let it speak for itself. The bands main composer,Vangelis Papathanassiou would later pen the main theme song to Chariots of Fire and probably made more money than he did while in this band.

Should I even bother?Hay, so I've been busy with school but now that I'm on break, I'll have some time for this blog again. Obviously I've got a ton of new stuff, but I'm just wondering if anyone is even still out there? The last few months the only comments I've been getting are junk spam that I haven't even bothered to delete. I've also noticed that some of my personal fave music blogs out there have shut down, but now I'm noticing a whole new generation have cropped up...

So what do you guys think? I'd like to have a bit more communication with the people who frequent this blog, so lets start by working up my motivation and leaving me some comments here that let me know if returning is even worth wild... or even any human beings are even out there reading this bull shit.

Count Five - Psychotic Reaction (1966 - rave-up garage-punk: The Yardbirds, The Who)

From the review I did on RateYourMusic.com, slightly fixing my grammer:

I suspect the main reason any one even has this album is thanks to Lester Bang's utra-hype. (Note, that the man also loved Lou Reeds Metal Machine Music.)

But, the truth is that this album is a bit of a mixed bag. The track "Psychotic Reaction" is the obvious hit here, it's a bit of a Yardbirds rave-up rip-off, but a good one regardless.

As for the rest of the album? Very few garage bands of this era were able to put out even more than just a few singles, so for The Cont Five to have produced an entire album says something. Most bands who actually were able to put out a full length album, usually filled them with week covers that just padded the hits.

Here's where The Count Five were different, most every song is an original, with the exception of the two Who covers, and there all killer. The two Who covers, "My Generation" and "Out in the Street," are better in their original incarnation, but had only been out for less than a year and the Who weren't sealing many albums in the states. So good for them.

Over all, there's not a whole lot of talent here, but there is passion, excitement, and best of all, variety. On par with bands like The Electric Prunes.

By the way, I think this isn't the original's track list, but that just means there's more songs. Yippie!!

From all accounts this isn't even a real band. Just a group of studio muscians cramed in a studio to make a quick buck on the wild and untamed youth and their endless hord of disposable income.

But unlike other fly-by-night mob-money exploito-shlock toss-offs, The Firebirds and their alter ego (read: label cash in) 31 Flavors manage to tear a new hole in the delicate fabric of stoned-dead Blue Cheer style acid-guitar nightmare rock. Burried under an avalanch of toxic-fuzz, the all-fills-all-the-time drums despratly try to dig, nay, beat their way out of this flash-back induced hell. The punchy bass acts as the massive counter-weight, giving force from the back, and the amature-Robert Plant gives this warship its direction.

Ok, so thay sound like Blue Cheer. A bit of Hendrix and maybe some Iron Buterfly. Check out my Bang post if its still up. They also steal the Doors melody from "Light My Fire."

This Firebirds album first got attention on the killer An Overdose of Heavy Psych album out on Arf! Arf! reocrds. They didn't have the whole album like I do hear, instead they pulled just the 4 most monstrous tracks from and added a few missing tracks from the 31 Flavors Hair album, which is the same band under a different name. This gets very confusing so stick with me: The Firebirds' Light My Fire album has less tracks than is listed on its sleeve. It appears that it lists the tracks "Free Bass", "Free Drum", and "Free Fuzz", which don't appear to be on this album. The CD version I have here on Radioactive Records (I can guarentee it's a boot, this label has gotten into some trouble before) only has 8 tracks, while the sleeve lists 10. The liner notes to An Overdose of Heavy Psych explain that "Free Drum" and "Free Fuzz" instead appear under a different band name 31 Flavors on the album Hair. Both albums were originaly released on the Crown lable in 1969 around the same time as Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath's firsts.

Yet another album might exist, released as The Electric Firebirds Dance Party Time, but who knows. What I've done here, is taken the Light My Fire album as it appears on Radioactive Records I trid fixing the track list because it was clearly wrong (someone let me know if I messed up), and then I added three tracks from the Arf! Arf! comp so that "Free Bass", "Free Fuzz" and "Free Drum" play back to back, as they are infact one song. Yes this means you get the track "Free Bass" twice, each from a different source. So shoot me....

I want to take the time to mention here, just as a side note, that the original Blue Cheer, or at least a Dickie Peterson (bass, vox) and Paul Whaley (drums) led incarnation, is currently on tour, and just recently came to Boston. Sure they were a bit dusty, but when they realy started to get going, it made you realize that these guys pretty much invented this sound. I don't know when people started to call guitars axes, but Blue Cheer could cut down a Sequoia. Check 'em out if you can. Anyways...

Well after doing a site search on google - site:http://espiritopublico.blogspot.com "new race" on all thouse site, I found what I was looking for on Espírito Público for the New Race album that features Deniz Tek (guitars), Rob Younger (vocals), and Warwick Gilbert (bass) from Radio Birdman alongside their direct influences in Ron Ashton (guitarist for the Stooges) and Dennis Thompson (drummer for the MC5). I haven't yet downloaded the whole album myself, but im sure it's great.

R.I.P. - 8 Days In April

There are a few blogs that first got me into this whole MP3 blog thing, the most notable being Chocoreve which focused heavily on 60's grage and psych and 8 Days In April which was more progressive and heavy psyche . Now sadly it looks like 8 Days In April is droping out for personal reasons and the blog will probably be comming down soon. There were a few of his posts that had realy wanted to put up myself, but I never got around to it. Since it looks like the site will be down soon im going to try to preserve some of my favorite posts here. I just quickly ran through and grabbed some of my fovorites. German Oak - German Oak (1972)

No, I haven't lost my mind, well not much of it anyway! I know I posted this back in November, but if you remember the rip that I uploaded had an error at the end of track one. Well after much searching and downloading, I finally found another rip of this album that has track one, "Swastika Rising" the way it is on the CD. Honestly it's not much different - the abrupt ending is intentional. But this is such a great album I thought I'd re-post it. Why did I go to all this trouble? Because I care!

German Oak - Niebelungelied (1972-1976)

So while I'm at it I thought I might as well post this one too. This appears to be a collection of demos, outtakes, maybe practice sessions, I'm not sure - information is scarce. The tracks are named after characters from German folklore, and they are kind of spotty. Some are real good, some not so much. In the end though, this is a pretty cool album - not as cool as their self-titled release, but worth having nonetheless.

Bulbous Creation - You Won't Remember Dying (1970)

Originally recorded in Kansas City USA in 1970, this is great jammy hardrock/psych with an intense atmosphere and far-out vocals. Lyrics deal with heroin, Viet Nam, satanism and more. The opening cut, "End Of The Page", has a real nice guitar intro and the other highlight is the lengthy "Let's Go To The Sea", which features some great Hendrix-style psychedelic guitar work. The remainder of the album comprises harder edged rock cuts, their own interpretation of "Stormy Monday" and "Hooked", which is the best moment on the album vocally. Worth checking out.

The Pretty Things - Phillipe DeBarge (1968)

The first 11 tracks on this bootleg are from an acetete of an unreleased album, recorded with a rich Frenchman who hired the Pretty Things to write some songs and record an album with him on vocals. Despite the fact that Mr. DeBarge had absolutely no musical experience, the album is surprisingly good, on a par with anything the band was doing at the time. Some of the songs are actually great. Unfortunately, the acetate doesn't seem to have been in the best of shape, there is some faint crackling, and even a jump on one track. Despite this, it is well worth a listen. The rest of the tracks, 12 - 24, are from various television appearances from 1964 to 1969.

Thunder And Roses - King Of The Black Sunrise (1969)

Thunder and Roses, an early power trio from Philadelphia USA, recorded King of the Black Sunrise in 1969. This garage rock album is a hard rockin', ultra heavy, Hendrix-inspired, slab of bluesy psychedelia. Track one, the classic "White Lace and Strange", was covered by Nirvana in a radio broadcast that is included on their box set "With The Lights Out". Great version of "Red House".

A while back I was obsessed with Black Sabbath. And not just Black Sabbath, but anything even vaguly sounding like or remotely ralated to the heathen god-fathers of all things doomed and metaled. But soon one thing lead to another and i found my self listing deep into the crusty grooves of obscure psydo-satano progressive Kroutrock bands for even just one thick-as-bricks guitar riff. Wet noodle guitar solos stopped bothering me, the words "jazz/rock fusion" no longer scared me. Yes, I'll admit it, I started likeing prog rock and so it had to stop.
Thus began my new quest for the purest of dimonds in the meaty, sweaty, leather clad rough. Yes I'm talking about rock n' roll.

Sounds easy, don't it? Well it isn't. I'm talking about pure, uncut, wepons grade, no-frills, rock and fucking roll, the kind that makes girls tingle and buckle at the knees while the guys can only nod approvingly and the sheer magnatitude of the leavel of balls-deep testostarone. Not psyche, not punk (not strickly at least), not metal.

We could argue this for hours, I'd say AC/DC is the purest rock
band, you'd retort by mentioning the MC5's. I'd say that Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen" embodies all that is rock, while you would say that it is The Flamin' Groovies "Teenage Head" that is the true bastion of the rock and roll holy grail.

This is all fine and good but geographicly we've hardly (with a few exceptions) moved from two central and vital locations. Detroit, Michigan and Australia. Deniz Tek, lead guitarist for Radio Birdman, was originaly from Ann Arbor, MI before heading to the land down under to form this rock and roll powerhouse as a knee-jerk reaction to Detroit's Iggy and the Stooges. Here's an ad they put out for like minded :

What is not wanted: bands who play shit like Quo, Purple, Queen, Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Bad Co, Ted Nugent (post 72), Bowie. In short any of the crap anyone can hear anywhere in this boring burg.

Radio Birdman pre-dated The Saints in Australia, who played a more obvious punk rock sound before "matureing". Radio Birdman on the other hand had the speed of punk, but were more deeply indebted to the proto-punk sound of band like the Stooges and the MC5.

Radio's Appear is their first album, but there are two versions of this scotcher of a debut. The Australian version out on Trafalgar Records has a different track listing than the US version on Sire. I don't have the Australian track order, but how you can tell the difference is to see which song is covered. The Australian version has a cover of the Stooges "T.V. Eye" as the first track, while the US version has a cover of the 13th Floor Elivators "You're Gonna Miss Me" some where in there. I have the US version, and now I'm going to have to get both versions. Or just the CD reissue with all the tracks plus bonus tracks.

After Radio Birdman broke up, Deniz Tek (guitars), Rob Younger (vocals), and Warwick Gilbert (bass) recuted their direct influences in Ron Ashton (guitarist for the Stooges) and Dennis Thompson (drummer for the MC5) to form a one album group New Race, who put out 1982's The First and the Last. Slayer - Haunting the Chapel (1984)

If you take a moment to notice, this entry is being posted on June 6, 2006, or 06/06/06, also known as The International Day of Slayer. So ever one must blast Slayer all day long till their neighbors ears bleed!!!! Fucking Slayer!!!!!!!!!!! ok, if you don't have any slayer handy but are by a computer (i know you are), go to their official web site slayer.net and check out the sample track "Cult" off their latest album that should be out on July 25th.

I wasn't origionaly going to put up any Slayer albums becuase they are all still in print and rather easy to find. I do own most of them on vinyl.

Luckly I remembered that I had this EP, Haunting the Chapel, which is still somewhat hard to find. There is a CD reissue that also has the track "Aggressive Perfector" which is also included on the CD issues of Reign in Blood. I know there's a fast version of that song and an earlier slower version, but I don't own any slayer on CD so im not sure.

Either way, "Aggressive Perfector" isn't on the original 3 song EP so I don't have it. But the three songs that are on it are absolutly killer. I think every one agrees that the 6 minute mastepiece "Chemical Warfare" is the best song on here, and in my opinion, one of the best Slayer songs ever. This EP is realy where the band step out from other bands at the time and showed that they were in a total league of their own. It was issued right after their first album, Show No Mercy, which still had some very faint elements or rock and roll in it. Haunting the Chapel compleatly left any concept of rock and roll behind heading dick-first into the deep and uncharted depths of ungodly metal.

Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica (1969)

I bought this album many years ago, when I was about 14 or 15 because I read an article about it in Spin magazine where Matt Groening said that this alum was one of the worst ablums he had ever heard, and it is now one of his all time favoriates.

I wasn't exactly ready for this album at that tender young age. It was too weird, too disjointed, too free-form, too non-sensical. There were a few songs, or even just parts of songs that would stick in my head long enough for me to consider them a "melody," there were a few non-sequiter comments that I understood as jokes, but over all, listening to this ablum was just a bit too much work. I had to try to understand it, i had to struggle to put the ideas together, and thus i had to work a bit to truly like it.

All these years later, Trout Mask Replica is still just as much of a struggle to listen to. But im starting to believe that all the hard work of trying to understand this album might just pay off.

Recorded in 1969, all the meterial was reportedly written in about 3 days, but took over 8 months of nearly non-stop practicing to get all the meterial down. Led by Captain Beefheart himself, the band lived in a comunal house in what one member described as a "cult-like" atmospher. The end result?

The best description is that it is a product of the late '60 astetic of being weird for the sake of being weird. But there is defeinaly much musical influence here as well. There lots of delta bules, Beefheart sings with a Howlin' Wolf-like gravely vocals. The band plays with the disjointed off-key rythem of the Shagges (not that they would have ever heard of the New Hampshire all-girl mongaloid-rock band, but Frank Zappa loved the Shaggs and also produced this album). Frank Zappa himself is a big influence on the weird-cuz-weird-fucks-with-the-Man ideas that are here. Beat free-from poetry. Jazz. Country. Expermintal art rock.

And in the end it sound like none of these anticednets and nor much of the other weirdness that would come after it. The more you listen to it the more it makes sense, but I don't know if I myslef am "totoaly there" yet. This album is still a stuggle, but if your interested at all at where the limites of rock and roll oddities can go, give this album a spin. "Fast and Bulbous! That's right the Mascara Snake! Fast and Bulbous!"

Velvet Underground - Squeeze (1973)

Everybody who talkes about it goes through the same motions, so I will to: this is not a Velvet Underground album, its a Doug Yule solo album, it shouldn't be in the Velvet's discography, blah blah blah...

Well, you know what? Who cares! This album is great, and Doug Yule is an extreemly tallented song writer. Every one craps all over this album and I bet they've never even listened to it. Just because they don't see Lou "I wrote Metal Machine Music" Reed in the lineup, they call it not a Velvet Underground album. Doug Yule wrote a bunch of the songs on Loaded and even sang lead on a couple of the tracks.
Ok, ok, so none of the other Velvet Underground members are on this album either, just a man named Ian Piece on drums and Doug Yule playing everthing else. So what I say, its all about the music, and as evident of Loaded the sound on Squeeze is the direction the band was heading in any ways. No droaning vodoo-mantras, no backwards three songs played on top of each other, just meat and potatoes rock and roll.

In fact, the only possible complaint I might have with this album (and its hardly a complaint), is that it sounds like Abby Road-era Beatles. Yes this seems more like a compliment, and largly it is, but a few of the songs sound a bit too suspiciously like some Beatles songs... I don't have speakers hooked up to my computer right now so I can't tell you exactly which ones, but whatever don't get hung up on this one, fuck the Beatles, fuck Lou Reed, this album rules and that's all you need to know.

Groundhogs - Split (1970 - hard and heavy acid-blues)

Due to the popularity of the the last Groundhogs post, Thank Christ for the Bomb, I'm going to post the next album buy this underrated band.

Admitedly I don't think Split is as good as Thank Christ, and even I'm suprised at the reasons why. Split is definatly heavier, noiser, and more rocking. All qualities that normaly turn me on. But for some reason, with this band i like their more melodic meterial better. Split does have the bands biggest hit, "Cherry Red" which nicely combines both hard rock and molodic elements perfectly. It sort of reminds me of the Golden Earings "Radar Love."

The first side of this album, the "Split"'s parts 1-4 are the louds tracks on here, but only "Split, pt. 2" realy sticks in your head thanks to a stong melodic part. Side 2's "Junkman" is similar - loud and heavy shifts into a nice back poarch melody. The last track, "Groundhog" is also a highlight sounding like authentic Delta Blues.

Over at Psychedelic Cinnamon there's a new post for Tomorrow first album. Amazing Brittish mod-psych stuff, that featured a young Steve Howe from Yes. Don't make fun, Yes wasn't THAT bad of a band.... I promice this is good though. "My White Bicycle" is a must have clasic of the genre, and they even had the balls to cover the Beatles "Strawberry Fields".

Simply Saucer - Cyborgs Revisited (1974-1975 - Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett Pink Floyd, Silver Apples)

This is a band that would be next to impossible to over hype, but dag-nabbit, I'm going to try. The reason for this is because Simply Saucer's Cyborgs Revisited is not only as earth shatteringly great as anyone has ever said in some pompus british hype-machine mag, Simply Saucer is better....

The catch-all comparisson of the band sounding like White Light/ White Heat -era Velvet Underground trying to out-noise-fuck Syd Barrett -era Pink Floyd is not only an accurate comparison - it's a promice!

Formed in Hamilton, Ontario Canada (god-bless 'em) in 1973 by Edgar Breau on lead guitar and vocals, Kevin Christoff on bass, Neil DeMerchant on drums, and Ping Romany on electronics.

Yes, I said it ELECTRONICS. Don't be afraid... no wait, be very very afraid. Just thank god Lou Reed didn't have access to the electronic oscilloscpoe madness that these Canucks had or we might haver never had a clear-headed pop album like Loaded. Oh, wait he did record that album Metal Machine Music.... gah.

It's these very snarled-guitar solos, and space-ray wobbles that put this album in the catagory of Krautrock comparisons like Can, but the songs won't put you to sleep. Infact, Cyborgs Revisited maintain a strong sense of melody mixed with chaotic-kamikaze blasts that only very few bands could manage to keep in perfect ballence.
Add Cyborgs Revisited to any list of vital proto-punk, post psychedelic, future-obsessed space rock, what, ever.... like i said i can't over hype this album. Just get it and let the music do the talkin'. Crank it up and blow your speakers out.

Groundhogs - Thank Christ For the Bomb (1970 - heavy and bluesy)

Lead by Tony (TS) McPhee, this band played a brand of melodic heavy blues, that at times had more conventional song structions and other times moved into prog/pscyh teritory, and in either case the Groundhogs tore it up with their nearly un parralled playing. The guitars hand pick notes like sound like they were made just for the song, the drums are often all over the place making use of every available part of the instrument. Amazing vocals.

There's a chance that on first listen, the Groundhogs migh not realy "do it" for you, but there more of a sit-and-listen type band thay will require some consideration before their impact is fully able to sink in.

Bands that i could compare them to.... um....: Stray, Blue Oyster Cult.... maybe. Sorry im doing a horrible job at discribing this band. There sort of unique and not so unique at the same time. You've just got to get into them i guess.

Screaming Lord Sutch - And Heavy Friends(1970 - Led Zep, Yardbirds)

Not half as bad as some people make this out to be. Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, John Bonham (the Yardbirds & Led Zepplin) , Noel Reddings (Jimi Hendrix Experiance) and the rest effortlessly put out top notch material that sounds like some unused Led Zep tracks. I used the phrase eforlessly because there are the ocational tracks that seem like the band wasn't trying very hard, but even when not trying, these guys still produce the goods.

Then there is Lord Sutch himself. Easily the weakest link here, but many times his off key yelp sorta works. Remember, rock and roll isn't necessarily a singing-man's sport (Dylan, Neal Young, Ozzy, for example) and Sutch works best when the band is rockin hard enough to mask his flaws. He's got Chutzpah, you've got to give him that. And some times that's all it takes.

Hellhammer - Apocalyptic Raids 1990 A.D. (1983 - reissued Doomy Black Metal - Venom, Celtic Frost)

Looking back it seems pretty silly to me that there was apperently so much beef between Metal kids and Punk kids (read as, hardcore not new-wavey bullshit). What they were doing wasn't so dissimilar. Motorhead was apparently the only band able to sucessfuly cross this divide, and their similarities would become more obvious when Grindcore devoleped in the later 80's.

But even then, I always assumed that what the two genres shared in spired, they differed in technique. Hardcore was about being short-fast-and-loud. Metal was only a slightly different take on a similar formula fast-loud-and-techniquely exreem. Slow-loud could work too, but technique seemed to be the major deciding factor.

Now listed to a band like Hellhammer. Heavily influenced by Venom from a few years before, both bands play a sort of primitive-metal that's a bit like regular only played by kids who have little knowladge of their instraments.

Hellhammer is noteworthy to most people only because it is Tom G. Warrior first band, later of Celtic Frost fame. This matters little to me, because the two bands are hardly the same. Celtic Frost's almost Wagnerian bombast is instead replaced by severly detuned guitar rumbling and Tom Warrior grunting and howling unintelligably (yes, im certing that at times is is just grunting and howling, no words).

So back to the hardcore/metal connection, I realy don't see to much of how this labodamy-metal is dissimilar to what hardcore bands like Discharge or Charged G.B.H. were doing at the same time. Demim, leather, studded belts... same dif.

Hell even the slow and brutal 9:30 "Triumph of Death" is in my opinion, very similar the the second side of Black Flag's My War alubm, in its sub-sub-Black Sabbath dirg. Tom G. Warrior and Henry Rollins' mad-man-cutting-off-his-own-leg routine is fairly interchangable.

This album was orriginaly released as a demo titled Apocalyptic Raids and this is a 1990 reissue. The only difference is that the last two songs on the reissue are not from that demo but are from a Death Metal Sampler that had never before been released in the U.S.

Witchfinder General - Death Penalty (1982 - Black Sabbath NWOBHM)

Ok, first a disclaimer: I've been very leary to post a lot of metal stuff. I have tones of it, and pleannty of it probably doesn't sell to many albums because they're from the 80's and 70's. But i can't realy tell what is our-of-print and what has been reissued. Is there some sort of site that i can check to see if something is in print or not?

Ok, here's where this segues into the next paragraph...

This album was first released in 1982, pre-cds, so that means just on vinyl for you children of the digital age. Witchfinder General also put out a second album in 1983 called Friends of Hell, both on Heavy Metal Reocreds. Some time after this this, the record lable owner became a born again Christian and refused to release these records because they where satanic or something. Or maybe it was because both album covers showing the band decked out in either Inquasition era or Colonial era cloths while sacrificing scantly clad woman.

These albums were reissued on CD in 1996, but not agiain after that. I think above mentioned record label owner needed some quick cash.

Soooooo, there for i think this album is out of print. Stonerrock.com has no copies of it this album, and only two copies of their of their next album, and Amazon.com com has it for $79.99, holy hot damn!

Ok, so now that I feel that this album is comfortably out of print, let me talk about how absolutly fucking killer this band is. If you don't like Black Sabbath, the leave the room now. In fact lets start with Black Sabbath as a templet.

It muight just be that Zeeb Parkes (vocals) sings better than Ozzy, and the rest of the band, Phil Cope (guitars), Woolfy Trope (bass), and Graham Ditchfield (drums), rocks out to a mix of Budgie and Sabbath.

Like Sabbath with a bit more punch in the guitar sound, this album might take a few listens before you start to realy see how much of their own unique sound Witchfinder General realy had.

So just as much as the music is killer, the lyrics are dumb as dog-shit. Now im just as big a fan of rock and roll poetry as the next guy, and Sabbath them self had some nice lines ("Would you like to see the Pope on the end of a rope - Do you think he's a fool?" - After Forever), but Witchfinder General really take the cake. Needless to say, it is absolutly essential that you get anything buy Witchfinder General if your into Black Sabbath, doom metal, NWOBHM, or even hard rock. Do you have a pulse? Then get this album!

Bee Gees - Odessa (1969 - Baroque Pop, i.e. The Zombies and The Beatles)

Don't laugh. The Brother's Gibb may have been best remembered for their mid 70's falsetto and glitter-pants shananagans defined by their Saturday Night Fever and Sgt. Pepper's atrociates, but i beg you to look beyond that for just a minute.

Let me tell you a story of an amazingly talended group of child prodogies from Austrialia (via England and then back), who got their career started with their own variety show. Yes, at only ages 15 thruogh 16, Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb recored originals and covers (their Beatles songs are DEAD-ON RINGERS for the originals) which were all grade A top notch, especially compaired to a lot of similar fair that was comming out at the time.

As they got older and the British Invasion was taking over, it made perfect sence for them to pack up and move back to England. They put out a few albums which needless to say, were top contendors for the premire harmonizing-vocal clasical-pop and just general lyte-psych expermenting of the day. Bands like The Left Bank or The Zombies easily come to mind, but the Beatles would be the most obvious point of reference in their similare imposible-to-pigonhole aproach.

So by 1969 when they set out to record their next album, as brothers often do, Barry and Robin got into disagreement over what exactly the direction of the album should be. One of the names tossed around for the project was Masterpeace if that gives you some idea of their ambitions. It was eventually titled Odessa.

Oddly, even though this album almost broke the band apart, the end result is one of the few double albums from its era that ACTUALLY stands up as a double album. You could say that it is somewhat inconsistant, half the tracks reflect the "american opera" concept, while the other half are just rock-solid Beatles-esq genera exercises that have a feel all their own. Either one of these two concepts, if left on their own, would make for a solid disk each, the more operatic songs might have come off a bit grandious, but together you get just the right does of different ends of the late 60's Brittish music spectrum. They even get into some Americana country-rock and the LP is covered in red velvet. Cool, non?

I'm not going to lie, a significant portion of my music research is done on the allmusic website. Sure it's good, and comprehensive,and has well, 20 second extreamly-low-quality sound samples.

the velvet underground - VU + Another View (1969)

Some time in 1968 John Cale left the band (or was fired by Lou, whatever) and a young man named Doug Yule was brought into the band to cover bass detail. Yule was from Boston and played in a band called, the Grass Menagerie. As far as I can tell, they never recorded anything (let me know if i'm wrong about this).

Now, I don't quite know why but poor ol' Doug seems to get no respect in the legend of the Velvet Underground's history. Many people don't even know who the hell his is, while at the same time that down-syndrome sounding wench Nico (she was a looker, though) get's all the credit. She sang (poorly i might add) one one studio album while Doug Yule performed on two. Thats a tie with that viola-hugging dandy John Kale. Yule sings lead on about half of Loaded's tracks.

...About Loaded... Apparenlty, after Doug Yule and his Velvet Undergrouds recorded their second self titled album (the mellow one), thay went into the studio and recorded a structurly suprisingly similar album.

Ultimatly the album was rejected by their record label. The band went back to the studio and recorded an album "loaded with hits" as the owner of their label had instructed them to do.

But durring the mid-80's return of interest in the band, their previous label, Verve, realized that they were sitting on a pile of unreleased Velvet meterial. These 1984 and 1986 albums contained most all of the unreleased album, as well as a hogepog of other tracks. Some of these tracks are great rock and roll numbers (Foggy Notion, We're Gonna Have A Goodtime Together, Temptation Inside Your Heart), brillent pop songs(She's My Best Friend, Ride Into The Sun), while others try to fill some of the avant-guard void that John Cale left (Ferryboat Bill, Hey Mr. Rain).

You can recreate the supposed "lost album" from these tracks, but im to lazy to post wich ones make up the tracklist. Maybe i will later.

The Smoke - ...It's Smoke Time (1967)

I had always thought this band was German, or Dutch. I guess it there were a number of factors including the fact that they are pretty well known, but artn't huge. With a single like "My Frind Jack" I can't see how thay could slip under the rader unless thay were from out side of England. The band members names are Mick Rowley, Geoff Gill, Mal Luker, and Zeke Lund. I figued that with names like Geoff, Mal, and Zeke thay had to be dutch. Also the repressing I have is all in dutch (or German, whatever).

Well it turns out The Smoke were Brittish, but only scored a hit it Germany. How this happend is beyond me becasue aside from their big hit "My Frind Jack" with its mind-warp oscilating fuzz-guitar sound and its none-too-subtle lyrics ("My frind Jack eats shugar lumps"!), many of the other tracks on this album are right up there with The Creation's "Makin' Time" in terms of guitar sound hacking. And they say Pete Townsend "invented" this?

The songs have a fairly standard 60's modish sense of melody, a few fillers, but more than enough fuzz-pop hits. Not all the songs feature knuckle-blistering guitar lines, but if thats what your looking for check out, "You Can't Catch Me", "High In a Room", but don't skip over the rest 'cuz songs like "Wake Up Cherylina" or "It's Just Your Way Of Lovin'" get by on song craft alone.

I have a few of their other singles like "Have Some More Tea" and "Sydney Girl" which are a real shame thay didn't make it onto the album. Maybe I'll put them up too someday, if you ask nicely.

John's Children - Smashed Blocked! (1968 - basicly)

The only reason most people have ever even heard of this band is because Mark Bolan was briefly a member. Which is to bad realy, because the future Mr. T-Rex only released one song with the band ("Desdamona", not on this album), before leaving the band to once again continue on with out him. What ever most of John's Children's better songs didn't need Bolan's squabbly munchkin voice.

The band was more like a hare-kiri Who. Or, better yet this is what I whished The Who sounded like if more of their meterial was up to "My Generation" standards.

Ok so thay sound like a lot of other British Mod-Psych bands like Tomorow or The Smoke. The few songs with Bolen in the mix are a bit more hippy-dippy-ish, but don't get me wrong their still good, especialy "Mustang Ford" which could have been a Bo Didley cover had I known better.

A good point of reference is the bands manager, Simon Napier-Bell who also briefly managed The Yardbirds. Napier-Bell even got Jeff Beck to play a little guitar solo on the single "But She's Mine." There are some week points (the track "Strange Affai" is an unlistenable toss-off that sounds like the theme song to "Are You Being Served"), but there are more than enough stone-cold killers. The track "Smashed Blocked" is as good as its name implies: swirling psychedilick chreschendos, dreamy breakdowns, jagged-amphedimine proto-punk. "Remember Thomas A'Beckett" features dizzying drum fills, and primitive "oh-ah"'s and a violen-bow-against-the-guitar riff that is reminiscent of The Creations "Makin' Time" guitar solo.

Oh, and they all wore white from head to toe. Pretty cool, huh?

Btw, I've got a few 7" with alternative versions, and other songs not on this album. I'll post them when I can.

The Electric Banana - Blows Your Mind (recordings from around 1967- 1969)

If you didnt' know it by now, The Pretty things were one of the best unsung bands from the 1960's. And by 1960's, I mean the whole damn decade. Their first singles were recorded in 1964 along the same time as the early Rolling Stones meterial. The Rolling Stones mention is appropriat because lead guitarist Dick Taylor playeyd in an early incarnation of the Stones. This early Pretty Things meterial is very R&B based like the Stones stuff, but the Pretties make the Stones seem like a bunch of goody-two-shoes compaired. Phile May on vacals takes a similar Jaggers vocal attack but kicks the raunch up to that of a spoiled 15 year old. Dick Taylor, Brian Pendleton, and John Stacks all ripped up Bo Diddley and Jimmy Reed covers, with Viv Prince on drums out Keith Moon-ing Keith Moon.

Not to get to much into the bands early days, their later meterial was highlighed by the album S F Sorrow which was recored in Abby Road Studios around the same time as Sgt. Peppers and Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It's also unquestionably on par with either of thouse albums.

But back to this album. Here's what I wrote in the Wikipedia article on The Pretty Things:

The band also managed to make some extra cash by recording a number of songs for the DeWolfe Music Library that eventually were featured in several low-budget films during the 60's and early 70's. Some of these films include 1969's What's Good For the Goose and 1969's Haunted House of Horror and even a couple of soft porn films. Not intended for official release, these songs were later compiled on to records and released under the alias Electric Banana: 1967's Electric Banana, 1968's More Electric Banana, 1969's Even More Electric Banana, 1970's Hot Licks, and 1978's Return of the Electric Banana. The initial releases featured one side of vocal and one side of instrumental tracks. Subsequent releases of these albums generally keep the true identity of the band secret.

So, Here's the Track list. Most of it is S F Sorrow era sounding, with all the non-Pretty Things and instramentals cut out.

The Beatles - Appleton Brand Apples (bootleg)

Don't actually have any info on this because its a bootleg recording. Most of the songs are from the "Get Back" sessions, and are of various qualities. It seems they were recorded early in the session because not all the songs lyrics are fully compleated. One song, Suzy Parker, I've never heard before. Listen for John Lennon off the cuff "don't dig no Pakistanis takein' all the money" right before breaking in to "Get Back." Kinda gives new meaning to the song.

Bang - Bang (1972)

Formed in 1970, this band from Philadelphia rocked just as hard as Black Sabbath was over in England or as Blue Cheer did over in in San Francisco. Ok so perhaps they were a bit more neanderthal but you've got to give these boys some credit for jumping on the heavy-as-hell chromatic blues riff band wagon sooner than most every one else. Just listen to the opening riffs to "Future Shock" or "Lions, Christians" for prime examples of late 60's/early 70's slabs of mutant proto-metal beef. Frank Gilcken plays his guitar like it was a rhythm instrument, hammering out palm mutes between enormous two note riffs. Frank Ferrara on bass in nearly in audable, so I can only asume he's playing the exact same dumb-as-bricks chord progression as the other Frank. Ferrara voice is a bit higher in regester, often sounding a bit like Robert Plant and Ozzy Osbourn.

And much like thouse two obvious influence, Bang has a few numbers where they take things down a notch or two. "Last Will and Testament" sounds alot like one of thous folky-er numbers that Tony Iommi seemed to love to put on most every Sabbath album.

All in all you'd be hard pressed to find anything that falls so squarly into the proto-metal genere that is not one of the above mentioned bands. Bang is severaly overrated, and this album shows it. If anyone has heard any of there other albums let me know. The bands website, lists one album before this one that's labled as unrealesd. Boy would I like to get my grubby paws on that! It also mentions them haveing reformed!

Destroy All monsters

Yep, they're named after one of thouse imported giant monster movies, with Godzilla vs Mothra vs Rodan, ect. But this band formed in 1973 with a femal-Iggy pop on vocals named Niagra. Yep, they were from Detroit also which means that by 1976 the band had recuited former Stooges guitarist Ron Ashton and former MC5's bassist Michial Davis, what a line up! But by this time they were releasing singls and trying to get played on the radio. This is what we have here on this 7 song self titled album on the Get Back label from Italy:

Unfortunaly this line up only lasted about as long enough to record just about these songs and little else. But there is also a massive 3 disc box set that covers the pre-Ashton and Davis years with just Niagara, Jim Shaw, Mike Kelley, and Cary Loren playing from 1976-1976. I've never seen this box set but it was reported put out on Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore's label in 1995. Though that original line up have subsuquently reformed occationly and put out an album of meterial (2001's Swamp Gas). I would like to hear either one of thouse albums so if any one has any info, let me know.

Dead Horse

If you didn't know, I was born in Texas. I have a love/hate relationship with the place. Gotta give props to the Whataburger though (actually im vegetarian, but come on, the place is called Whataburger).

Any ways, Metallica arn't from Texas. But if they were, thay might have sounded like Houston's Deadhorse. Or if Slayer threw in a few bango parts into the mix. The band released two LP's and a demo all on their own label Death Ride Records, but have recently be rereleased by Relaps Records. Here's the track list from their 1988 album.

Their next album Peaceful Death and Pretty Flowers came out in 1991, and Mike Haaga, the band's vocalist/guitarist and artists (with a stong pushead influence), later went on to play in on the first Superjoint Ritual album. I found out about this band from my brother (who is from Texas) and I'm going to see about getting a copy of the Peaceful Death album and the demo.

As a note, I totaly support you checking out these bands, and then going out and buying the albums. Im shooting for sticking only to rare stuff anyways, so hopefully you'll find a vinyl copy and screw what ever record label out of moneyFuck them. Go buy the bands t-shirt, thay make more money off that any ways. I'll fill these posts with links for good measure.

I got this song from the real nice 5-disk Pebbles Box, as well as a few other Pebbles comps. For thouse of you who don't know, Pebbles is the evil red headed step child of the Nuggets comp series, which was the first compilation series to repackage old and forgoten garage rock track from the mid to late 60's (released by Lenny Kaye the guitarist for Patty Smith in 1972). Pebbles features even more obscure, more demented, more raw, tracks from this first wave of proto-punk bands. Here's a list of most everything Pebbles.

But back to Randy Alvey. Like most unknown bands from this era, little is know about them (duh!). Apparently the band wan't too pleased with the quality of the recording, which is ironic because it was exactly that raw grungy sound that lead to this track not only resurfacing on the Pebbles series, but also to the Cramps doing a cover version.

If you listen to the song, you'll see that its supposed to be the bands theam song, or their gang, or what ever, warning others that "We're not to fast/ we're not to slow/ Come along baby, to see where we go/ Jump your [???], let us get your high/ We're the Green Fuz"
